Georgia-based indie duo hey, nothing made their opening set for The Moss at Skully’s Music Diner in Columbus, OH feel like a headliner’s home show last Wednesday, October 16th. Initiating the show with banter between the crowd and artist, introducing themselves between playful quips, the pair quickly turned the venue into something of a community. They opened with their song, “Too Drunk to Drive”, which had the audience singing--screaming--along right off the bat. If attendees didn’t know hey, nothing before the show, they were definitely captivated by impressive guitar riffs, charming harmonies, and endearing conversations.

The set was beautifully balanced, offering high-energy hits like “i haunt ur dreams” and melancholic ballads like “Maine” while celebrating the genre with a cover from The Strokes. Tyler and Harlow kept the room interacting not just with the music, but with each other. During their cathartic hit, “The Sink”, they instructed audience members to argue with one another, building up that fire, so the entire room could scream the final chorus together. Similarly, Harlow taught us the lyrics to the “Hitchhiking” bridge, so when it came time to close the set, everyone was wrapping it up as one.

Visuals during hey, nothing’s performance were nothing short of simple yet effective. Clad in the indie/alternative uniform of baggy jeans, flannels/vests, and staple tees, the band felt just like cool members of the crowd. The spectacle of their set was how both performers played guitar with their whole bodies, displaying how easily the music can be felt in every inch of our souls. For an entirely acoustic set, hey, nothing sure kept us wrapped around their fingers, gravitating towards their lyrics, and swaying to their beat.
