Angelina’s Corner: Roundup
Words by Angelina Singer
Chasin’ Headlights by Ty Wilson
This pop rock song with a down-home country feel has a great Americana vibe to it. The theme is hitting the open road after touring to get home to your family. While most people might not relate to being on tour, the smooth guitar solo and punchy chorus will definitely resonate with anyone who finds themselves missing their family or friends. Play it loud for an instant mood boost no matter where you’re heading.
This girl-power song will hype you up to leave a toxic relationship (or friendship, or situationship, whatever it is that’s leaving you feeling drained). I liked the pop vibes and the self-awareness in the track, that it’s up to each individual person to keep their own social circles healthy - and remove themselves from anyone who threatens that delicate ecosystem. There’s also a good bit of angst in it that makes the topic relatable. Listen to it anytime you need a reminder that in moderation, boundaries are healthy.
Touch of Adrenaline by Woodstone
I loved the textures in this song, and the way that you can hear the heartache in the lyrics. It’s written about the energy behind a relationship that burns out too fast and leaves one or both people feeling drained and upset at the abrupt ending. “So come take my love / I’m not asking too much of you” is just a taste of the deeply thoughtful and raw lyrics. Bonus points for the gorgeous vocal harmonies and the string section that adds a classy touch to this sultry alternative track with emo undertones.
Loved You Better by Saint of Sunsets
Another heartbreak tune, this piece is about wishing you could have shown up better in a relationship that ended. While delving into the feelings of regret and sadness around making mistakes in a past relationship, listeners are treated to bright sonic articulations that contrast the darkness of the meaning. If you’ve found yourself in a similar situation, this song is guaranteed to bring you some comfort — just don’t forget to have tissues nearby.
Reason to Live by Malachi Gagnon
One more heartache song rounds out this week’s selection, with an added layer of still caring about the other person despite the relationship ending. “Pain is something you can’t put to words / I need you to tell me you’ll be okay” are only some of the beautiful lyrics that accompany the subtle string section in the background. While it’s hard to know which person to root for in the story of this song, I applaud the speaker of this song for wishing nothing but good things and peace for their ex-lover. And without knowing the details and reasons for the split, I’d say the other person may not have been thinking clearly about the decision to break up. Enjoy this song if you’re also in a healing season — or if you just need a good cry.
