Angelina’s Corner: Roundup
Words by Angelina Singer
This fun pop track is in the girl-power anthem category, with an emphasis on being mindful of who you let in your personal life. While some new flings can be fun, they often burn out fast and leave you wondering how you made such a big mistake — hence the title of the track. I liked the buildup up to the second choruses and the sultry vibes punctuated by jazz-fusion guitars. While the topic would lend itself easily to a more punk genre, I really appreciate her more visionary idea to place this song in the alt-pop realm instead. Listen anytime you need to feel understood for choices that you can no longer explain.
How perfect is the artist’s name for this track? Even if it’s just a stage name, I think it’s great. And the track speaks for itself. I enjoyed the tasteful banjos, gritty country feel, and the smooth vocals that pull all the pieces together. The artist is sharing about her proclivity to get out in the fresh air and the trees to fully experience life. If you’ve been looking for an excuse to get outside, or a new song for your next camping adventure, you’re in the right place.
Steven Lee Ebert: All the Good Ones are Taken
This bittersweet track about having trouble finding that someone special. It’s a bit wistful, because he’s remembering a past love, but also sharing frustration about loneliness. It’s also got a lot of country-inspired strings that will transport you right to a peaceful farmstand with rolling hills and fluffy clouds. Even if it rains, this song will remind you that you’re not the only one who feels this way, and that things will always turn around eventually. Bonus points for the key change that quite literally, brings this song to another level.
This edgy track feels like something that would fit on the “Wednesday” series soundtrack. Yet another angsty song about romance gone wrong: “I am lying in a bed of roses / but there are thorns drawing out my blood”. The genre is something in the pop realm, but you’ll have to listen to it for yourself. There’s a club-inspired beat, and slightly-distorted vocals that have a haunting presence to them. The poeticism of the lyrics is what really caught my attention, and I liked the brightness of the choruses that beautifully contrast the grit of the verses.
On the opposite side of setting boundaries, there can be hurt feelings — which is exactly what this song is about. Basically when someone leaves your life, and even when they have good reasons for doing so, you might have an influx of emotions about it. And whatever you’re feeling, is perfectly okay. I love the message and the bright, 80s-pop inspired mix that will bring a breath of fresh air to you if you’ve been stuck in a funk. Listen to it if you’ve been at odds with someone you care about but want to find a sense of peace around the situation anyway.
