Angelina’s Corner: Roundup
Words by Angelina Singer
Leave Me in the Summer by Daniella Vega
This bright and airy wistful track is such an atmospheric sonic experience to sink into. I absolutely loved her vocal harmonies mixed with her thoughtful reflections about struggling to figure out her faith and growing out of an old relationship. While I truly hope she finds the spiritual truth she needs in her life, this song is a very thoughtful place to begin the journey of growth and becoming who you were always meant to be.
Not Sorry Yet by Katie Greenberg
This song is a shining example of how to use sonic textures throughout the song - and her gritty vocals are just the icing on the cake. I also appreciated the emotional nuances of being frustrated in a relationship but not being brave enough to fully cut ties. This is a great song to cry to and something that you’ll definitely want to listen to while you heal from whatever hurt you - and come back stronger and better for it.
Heart is a Tombstone by Thunder and Rain
For a down-home country song that’s got a good measure of angst in it, this song by Thunder and Rain is just the ticket. It’s a slick package full of fiddles, vocal harmonies, and just enough frustration about a failed relationship to be relatable. I also love the creativity of feeling dead after emotional abuse, which is all too common - and perhaps this song might bring you some comfort if you’re in a similar place.
This sweetly honest song about never feeling valued in a relationship hits all the right notes. Ri’s gentle vocals feel like something straight out of a diary entry - almost a bit too personal to listen to (usually the mark of a great song). Country staples like some banjo action and other intriguing textures add to the piece, bringing musicality to the thoughtful prose. Listen loudly if you need a hug and a good cry (in no particular order).
This sultry pop punk song is such a fun homage to the pitfalls of a no-strings-attached romance. I liked the clever musicality in it and the lead guitar alongside the edgy vocal performance. It’s a fun song to blast if you’re with your friends, daydreaming about your next mistake. Interestingly, this song was written by the vocalist when she secretly dated the drummer in her own band - pretty scandalous, right? And super bold of them to publish the song, regardless of how it ended.
