Angelina’s Corner: Roundup
Words by Angelina Singer
This energetic yet sultry pop track depicts the uncertainty and adrenaline rush of falling in love before you know how anything is going to end up. It’s a bit sonically on the edge, even as the dynamic themes continue to roll and build on one another as the song progresses. This one has such a great radio sound that’s just begging to hit your airwaves. I also loved the sonic dynamics and the sensory details in the lyrics that really make this song hit home for anyone who’s ever been in love or hopes to be someday.
ORION 224
I loved the bright guitar rhythms that start out right from the beginning - a beautiful way to mimic the way every love story starts out so hopeful. It’s got some vocal styles that reminded me a bit of the doo-wop crooners that made the vintage beach music so great, with an updated pop-punk spin. The super-relatable vocals echo (“I fall in love but still freak out”), as if from a dream or someplace far away. This band really nailed their own style while centering themselves deeply in the existing sound space without feeling repetitive. Listen loud for the hopeless romantic blues to dissipate faster than you can catch the next gnarly wave.
Such Ancient Things by Mike Hewlett & The Racket
Right away I was enthralled with the textural guitar work alongside the driving drumbeat. It’s totally relevant to the indie and emo pop scenes, which are some of my personal favorites. Bonus points for the bright dynamics and gritty vocals that punctuate the choruses alongside the lyrics all about personal growth and being brave enough to forge a new path for yourself. Listen to this one if you need an attitude adjustment or just want to feel motivated to take on your next adventure with gusto.
Seemingly off the desk of Phoebe Bridgers or Gracie Abrams, this artist brings her own flair to telling her story of a toxic relationship alongside string melodies and a haunting ambience. This song is emphasizing the trouble with letting go of unhealthy relationships even though they are familiar and comfortable in their instability. But this starlet is reminding listeners not to stay there while giving themselves grace in the meantime. If you’ve found yourself in a similar situation, this song will help you find your way to a better future.
This song is a delightful escape that’s just the thing for spring break (or anytime you want to cut loose and let go of stress). Catchy guitars articulate between the rhythmic drum beats, punctuated by sprightly harmonizing lead guitars. As the seasons change, there’s so much to explore and be grateful for - and it’s this fresh start that the band wants to write about. Whether you’re in need of a new perspective or just want to remind yourself why you’re on this journey, this song will be the perfect soundtrack to bring you someplace new and fantastic.
