Angelina’s Corner: Roundup
Words by Angelina Singer
This gorgeous acoustically-articulated homage to a relationship that went sour and the aftermath of the loss will definitely resonate with you. I loved the smooth vocals and the delicately-placed falsetto moments that punctuate the melancholy moments in the storytelling. The bright melody also features musical-theater-like sentiments that add so much drama to the overall listening experience. “I feel so far from home / no matter where I go” is the overall message behind losing a connection with someone he loved so deeply. If you’ve ever been heartbroken, this song will comfort you in ways that you didn’t even know you needed.
This acoustic-driven track is a beautiful look into the speaker’s diary: “I am enough / you are too” is a beautiful sentiment of acceptance and love, no matter where life brings you. I absolutely loved the raw vocal runs in this piece and the clarity of both the vocals and the overall vision behind the ideas. The string section in the post-chorus interlude adds some delightful textures to the overall style and approach to the production. The way the vocals really embrace that tasteful “cry” in their delivery really stuck with me as I listened, and I have no doubt you’ll appreciate everything this song has to offer when you listen to it too.
Jupiter Flynn
This bright track delivers so much joy in its delivery from start to finish. It’s the perfect soundtrack to your next rainy day, and I love the way it encourages listeners to prioritize calm moments of reflection in their lives. These little moments are emphasized by subtle string sections in the choruses for some added flair. No matter where your days take you, don’t forget to stop and smell the roses, appreciate the little things, and honor your feelings as you heal from the struggles that are tricky to talk about. Mega bonus points for that delightfully swampy dueling guitar solo in the bridge that flawlessly mimics the vocal melody.
Jupiter Flynn: Blind
This band is one to watch - with an effervescent, brutal-but-bright style a lot like Phoebe Bridgers, Gracie Abrams, and mxmtoon, they’ll cut to the chase and leave you slack-jawed in one fell swoop. “You cut me open / and you took your damn time / swear you were hoping I’d never realize / you were making me blind” is an incredibly visceral line that will resonate so deeply with people healing from a toxic relationship of any kind. I love the way the two vocalists harmonized together in a way that made them sound almost like one person, but with added notes and textures. Listen to this one when you need a cathartic break from feeling overstimulated by other people’s emotions and unsolicited expectations.
Jovi Greene: Photograph and Me
This song has an incredibly-palpable present-tense storytelling feel, with a trotting acoustic guitar rhythm that keeps listeners on the edge of their seats. “I’m just a worn-out boy singing on my broken guitar” is delightfully relatable and so humble — especially given the artistry of this track. It’s a story of loss, remembering, and wishing for something more than just the memories to hold onto. While the style is significantly country, I’d argue it veers nicely into the indie-pop category just as well. I also loved the slide guitar solo that led into the regular electric guitar solo for an elevated twist on the typical song form. No matter what leads you to this song, you’ll find a home in the lyrics describing a lonely porch swing that suddenly doesn’t feel quite so lonely anymore.
