Angelina’s Corner: Roundup
Words by Angelina Singer
This gorgeous acoustic-guitar centered tune about growing up and the overall passage of time. It’s got a subtle, fairytale-esque flair with a waltz beat and musical dynamics that will get stuck in your head as you reflect on your own life and all the changes that come with it. Best listened to on a rainy day with a cup of something warm to hold, you’ll love this cozy and reflective sonic space to inhabit for as long as you need.
Prophecy by Mary and the Sharks
This alt-rock anthem is such a fun vibe with a pop punk Paramore style that will bring you right back to the 2000s as you remember how nothing stays the same for very long. I also loved the vocal harmonies leading into the catchy chorus and the synth-y moments throughout. If you’re not head banging by the end of it, I’d be shocked. Listen to this one loud with your friends (or your crush, if you’re feeling extra daring). An ambient guitar solo towards the end brings a satisfying conclusion to the tune.
This song instantly reminded me of Disney-turned alt funk band The Driver Era. The buildup to the chorus is so much fun and really lets your stress go out the window. Rhythmic guitars punctuate the choruses as this song inspires listeners to create the reality they want to experience by not looking back at the past. You’ll love this one when you blare it through your windows on a warm day.
Love Me Tonight by Wesley Saylor
For a danceable beat that’s also a bit sultry, you’re in the right place. “Right here right now I ain’t waiting / listen up to what I’m saying” are the lyrics leading into the chorus, and the whole thing will keep you energized and ready for a night out on the town. Similar to styles like Jason Derulo’s “The Other Side”, it’s a romantic track about making the most of the time you have with the one you love the most. Get ready to celebrate life when you listen, and don’t forget to embrace every moment.
Parallel Lines by Lou Lou Safran
This song has a Phoebe Bridgers sort of feel, with some added country albums. Yet another coming-of-age track about how things change. “I want to be the perfect daughter / great match for the perfect father” talks about the pressures of being flawless despite the uncertainty of life. I love the addition of the pedal steel guitar and the overall immersive country vibe that transports the listener onto a quaint small-town farm. Enjoy this one when you need a hug and some reassurance that you’re doing just fine even when you feel like you’re not.
