Concert Recap: Wasia Project

Words by Hannah Pena

A stormy night, with a hurricane underway, did not stop fans from seeing the Wasia Project at Terminal West. By moving the show up, fans enjoyed the show safely and got home safe. Formed by siblings Olivia and Will, their indie-jazz-pop songs brought everyone to ease and showcased their powerful voices. Having released their EP, “Isotope,” last month, the crowd was eager to hear the new project live and in person. The opening night of their US tour consisted of a new set list, a cover song, and fans singing their heart out with the band.

The wonderful Sabrina Sterling started off the night. Her bright red guitar caught everyone's attention. Sabrina’s calming voice was shown through her songs, “Soon,” “Bittersweet,” and “If You’ll Have Me.” The crowd was swaying along and was admiring her set. Sabrina expressed her opening-night nervousness, but fans cheered her on for every song, which helped her through the set. Sabrina was a wonderful opening act.

Unveiling the drum, piano, and guitar kit, fans were cheering on the crew. The lights dim and the intro to “Is this what love is?,” began. White lights shined on Will and Olivia. Olivia soothing voice took over the venue, with Will’s talented piano work. Will was rocking a white and black stripped long sleeve shirt, while the elegant Olivia wore a black tube top, with silver rings, arm bangles, silver nail polish, and brown plaid pants. The siblings then went into, “My lover is sleeping.” A slower song than the last, Olivia blessed the crowd with her beautiful harmonies.  The siblings then played “U Deserve,” and “Petals On The Moon.” Fans cheered for “Petals On The Moon,” as this is one of their most popular songs. Everyone went from quietly singing along, to singing loudly and jumping up and down.

Green and blue lights shined for “How Can I Pretend,” a short demo, which then transitioned into “Burning Eyes R Calling.” A 5-minute song tangling the depths of wanting someone, but they are with the wrong person. The Wasia Project then sang “Takes Me Back Home,” and “Remember When.” Will then played the piano to “Ur so pretty,” their most popular song, which played in Netflix’s show Heartstopper. The room erupted with screams and everyone had their phones up to record. After the song ended, Olivia expressed her gratitude for fans singing along. From a soft piano ballad, we then heard their cover of “Smooth Operator.” Olivia’s voice was perfect for this cover, and they added their own twist with additional harmonies and guitar solos. Their encore songs were “Misfit Biscuits,” and “Impossible.”

The Wasia Project put on such a beautiful and unforgettable show. Will and Olivia are a force to be reckoned with. Everyone was singing and dancing to all of their songs. The way they put the crowd in a trance with their angelic harmonies, soulful covers, and memorable piano solos, it’s a show you do want to miss.
