Angelina’s Corner: Roundup

Ky Bailey

Strings by Ben Flournoy

Dance-pop meets coming-of-age in this bright new song loaded with poeticism and creativity about being a musician. I especially loved the expertly-crafted guitar riffs after the chorus, providing a much-needed sonic interlude. “Each day is like a work of art / everything is music” is so true and inspirational, and the guitar solo provides some space for the listener to reflect. Keep an eye on this young star, because I have a feeling he’s got an extremely bright future ahead of him.

Just Say Something by Emilio Lanza

Frustrations around love and the loss of it colors the notes of this ambient, immersive track. I love the strong, emotional vocals and poetic lyrics about finding meaning in a relationship. Staccato beats and solid sonic dynamics make this song equal parts dance-able and reflective. Best listened to while nursing some heartache - or preventing it from happening again in the future.

Culmination by Ky Bailey

This song sounds like fresh air and good memories - so open your windows and play it loud. It’s all about the acceptance in the aftermath of heartache, and learning and growing from the experience. Warm vocal harmonies and acoustic guitar team up to bring this comforting track to your speaker. Best paired with a warm cup of coffee on a fall morning, it’s the peak season to listen loud and process strong feelings until you find yourself somewhere new.

Martin & James

Learning To Say Goodbye by Martin and James

Despite the heavier theme about mental health and depression, this song is surprisingly bright and hopeful. I loved the vocal harmonies, intricate sonic layers of piano and guitar, and the lyrical poeticism. Mimicking the sound of great country acts like Lady Antebellum or The Band Perry, there’s a lot to love here - and the song encourages listeners to cope with sadness and loss while also being there for the people around them that need support the most.

Why Hold On by Brett Ryder

Continuing the theme from the previous song, this is another one about mental health - but the feeling of failure when you can’t sustain your progress. In the name of self-love and growth, this is a great song with passionate vocals, and great sonic dynamics and growth. Listen to it to feel heard in a world that’s ever-changing and hard to cope with sometimes.
