Angelina’s Corner: Roundup

Words by Angelina Singer

Save Me by Sarah Biddick

This punchy country-blues tune has a lot of angst and girl-power mixed in. With strong vocals and a taste for revenge, the storytelling in the song is equal parts heartbreaking and liberating as the speaker takes back her power in the aftermath of an abusive relationship. For anyone who relates or just appreciates a good dose of breaking free, this song hits all the right notes and might just inspire you to keep your own boundaries strong.

I instantly loved this delectable pop-punk gem punctuated by all the sugary sweetness of having a crush and acting all goofy around them. From the dynamics, to the poetic lyrics, and the strong vocals, there’s so much to resonate with in this song. “Keep me in the front of your mind / I need attention all the time” is at the center of the message, and whether you want to admit it or not, I think we’ve all been there before. Even if you’re past the crush stage of your life, this song is such a fun blast to the past if you’ve been craving the 2000s but your time machine is in the shop.

Such a sonic contrast from the previous song right before this one, the ethereal harmonies are what stole the show on this one. Listening to this one felt like a surreal sound bath with calming tones that washed away so much stress — despite the sad message of missing someone, of course. Whether you’re looking for a new jam to meditate to, or just want a moody and broody rainy day track to reflect with, this one is just the thing.

Don’t Believe in Ghosts by Brooklyn Baby

This alt-pop track has such a fun vibe — I enjoyed the surprising addition of the wind instruments in the chorus, and it makes me want to jump around and go window shopping all at the same time. It’s also got great sonic dynamics, so every piece of the song is well-defined and enjoyable to listen to. With clear, energetic vocals bordering on the pop punk genre (like The Click Five or All Time Low), this song has something for everyone — whether you’re a country mouse or a Brooklyn baby.

Starts With Us by Amelie Lucille

This artist might be Phoebe Bridgers’ long-lost sister. She’s got the same sense of calm serenity populated by deep inkblots of sadness and macabre throughout — but in the best way possible. It’s calming, with a relaxing sense of being understood in the aftermath of a relationship ending. No matter where you’re at in your love journey, this song will remind you that you’re not alone: “are you always going to run / no matter who got hurt”. Listen to this one with a warm cup of tea, and remember that your feelings are valid no matter how complicated the other person makes the situation seem.
