Feature: The Beaches

Words by Kelly Carrazzone

Glittering, grunge-rock band The Beaches are coming in hot with their fearless, in-your-face anthems on growing up, letting go, and watching it all fall to pretty pieces. This Toronto-based four piece continues to evolve as a badass group of women who push all the boundaries of your typical alt-rock tracks. Their latest EP “Future Lovers” proves The Beaches are without a doubt one of Canada’s greatest modern rock acts. As they wrap up their support tour for The Aces, I got to catch The Beaches band members Jordan and Leandra in Nashville to hear about all the exciting things these ladies have in store for 2022. And let me tell you…. this band is about to blow your mind.

Bursting onto the music scene over 8 years ago, The Beaches band members Jordan Miller, Leandra Earl, Kylie Miller, and Eliza Enman-McDaniel have been the driving force behind this incredible rock band since their earliest EPs in 2013 and 2014. These four women rose out of Toronto with a hunger for hard pop/rock music that has fueled their musical passions all these years later.

The Beaches found early success with their 2016 single “Give It Up”, a teeth-gritting, spiteful track that refuses to be complacent in the face of a stale relationship. It didn’t take long for this band to set the world ablaze with their thrumming, defiant song “T-Shirt”. Sitting with over 4.6 million streams on Spotify alone, people flocked to The Beaches music for their unapologetic attitude, snappy lyrics, and hard rock undertones.

The band’s full length album “Late Show” was released in 2017 with production by the unbeatable Emily Haines and James Shaw of Metric. The album received raving reviews from listeners across the globe who praised the band’s stark, confrontational lyrics and catchy, rock-heavy melodies. After releasing “Late Show”, The Beaches won Breakthrough Group of the Year at the 2018 Juno Awards.

While catching up with Jordan and Leandra before their Nashville show last week, the ladies said their strong foundation as a band definitely helped them push through the trials of 2020 as they continued to evolve creatively.

“I think we all had the same goal to keep writing, creating, and planning even when it was a frustrating time. We didn’t want anything to stop us from growing as artists and we knew having a completed body of work ready-to-go once we were able to play shows was super important to us.”

Besides this band’s impressive discography, The Beaches put on one hell of a show every single time they hit the stage. No really. It is a magical thing to watch these artists effortlessly command the room’s attention with their groovy melodies, crooning vocals, and rebellious aura. Whether it’s your first time seeing The Beaches perform live or your thirteenth time, you can expect nothing less than a flawless performance and ridiculously good time.

After releasing their kick-ass EP “The Professional” in 2019, The Beaches refused to let COVID-19 falter their stride. Not only did the band continue releasing smash singles like “Fascination”, “Lame”, and “Desdemona”, the group also put out hauntingly beautiful live versions of each single as well. You know a band is good when they can release live material without batting an eye. Fans were ecstatic to get more live music tracks from the Toronto-based band, especially during such a scary, uncertain time in our world.

It’s no surprise that numerous legendary acts have already taken The Beaches under their wing for incredible tours and shows in the past few years. Bands like The Rolling Stones, The Glorious Sons, and Passion Pit have all gotten hooked on The Beaches’ undeniably unique sound since their early beginnings in 2013.

The band’s most recent EP “Future Lovers” has quickly become a staple rock record for fans of The Beaches’ music. This EP oozes with reckless defiance and a fiery sense of contagious confidence. For fans of rock bands like Arkells, The Strokes, and The Regrettes, The Beaches bring your favorite rock/pop sounds to a whole new level in their quest for musical greatness.

In a rush of breathless ease, The Beaches had the entire Nashville crowd jumping and dancing before the first song of their set even ended. Complete with wicked guitar solos, stunning vocals, and drums that carried every song, these ladies have perfected the art of taking over audiences with their unmatched energy and excitement.

If you haven’t gotten a chance to see The Beaches live yet, do not fear! The “Future Lovers Tour” will travel all across Canada in 2022 and you can grab your tickets here. Be sure to follow The Beaches on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube. And of COURSE go stream their latest single “Blow Up” on Spotify and Apple Music
