Feature: Maisie Peters
Words by April Bredael
Penning everyday diary entries into stories shared with the world, Maisie Peters has quickly captured the hearts of fellow indie kids across the globe. With passions including trendy pants, Taylor Swift, and a self founded book club, the 21 year old’s unspoken charm is evident like no other. Peters recently released debut album You Signed Up For This via Ed Sheeran’s Gingerbread Man Records label.
Highly anticipated by fans, the rising superstar has seen an incredibly positive reaction to the record. Featuring tracks like ‘John Hughes Movie,’ ‘Psycho,’ ‘Brooklyn,’ and ‘Volcano,’ fans simply cannot get enough of her.
Although she’s only been releasing music for a past couple years, she’s quickly racked up billions of global streams and has been noticed by the likes of Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and more. I had the chance to catch up with Masie Peters over Zoom and got an inside look on everything that goes on inside the mind penning her well acclimated lyricism.
Peters excels within transcending seemingly normal and everyday experiences into virally global hits, with fans eagerly listening to enjoy and relate. Her debut album is described as “a coming of age story and a love letter to her childhood,” featuring immense lyricism throughout the duration of the fairytale of a record.
After a series of impressive performances including ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel, the British popstar has also recently announced a 2022 “You Signed Up For This” tour which kicks off in March. “It was a wild summer,” she shares on her experiences with live performances, “It was just such a special experience and it was really memorable. I’ll always remember it as part of this album.”
Although her favorite song on the album changes constantly, the singer-songwriter revealed that track five is her current favorite.
When it came to conceptualizing her debut album she shares that, “It was a lot, there were so many components to it, and it kind of feels crazy that it came together in the end.”
“It was a long time coming and it feels like a fever dream now that it’s out.”
Peters shares that she’s been writing songs for as long as she can remember. From finding her manager at fifteen to immediately feeling ‘creatively fulfilled,’ she knew that this was something she wanted to do as long as she was able.
Of course, the support wouldn’t be possible without the fans and those listening to the music. “I’m just so grateful that anyone does, and I really don’t take them for granted and I just love them all, I think they’re so funny and perfect and wonderful and I’m so lucky to have not only an audience but like, the nicest, funniest, sweetest audience. I’m really grateful,” she concludes.
